Mr. Michael Martin

My name is Michael Martin, this is my second year teaching South Carolina history. I am feeling truly blessed to be at a great school like Morningside, in the heart of the Lowcountry.

8th Grade Social Studies standards focus on the history of South Carolina, but we do not just look at history. According to the National Council for Social Studies, there are 10 themes to teaching history:

-Culture
-Time, continuity and change
-People, places, and environments
-Individual development and identity
-Individuals, groups, and institutions
-Power, authority, and governance
-Production, distribution, and consumption
-Science, technology, and society
-Global connections
-Civil ideals and practices

As you can see, social studies is no longer just about memorizing facts and dates. Our ultimate goal is to produce scholars that are competent citizens and creative, independent thinkers.

In addition to personal goals, the state and school require that we constantly strive to improve standardized test scores. My personal recommendation is to go straight to the source, and study the standards that I am posting below (these are state created):

Knowledge is power, I will do my best to engage and inform all scholars. However, the effort cannot end at school. My only request of parents and scholars is that they study their notes and standards 5-10 minutes a night. Social Studies is heavily based on concepts and various people/places/things. If you review class material daily you will be destined for success. Please contact me with any questions.

I ATTENDED THE university OF south Carolina, WHERE I OBTAINED A BACHELOR'S degree IN HISTORY, AND A MASTER'S DEGREE IN TEACHING SECONDARY SOCIAL STUDIES. WHETHER YOU KNOW IT OR NOT, COLLEGE AND REAL LIFE IS JUST AROUND THE CORNER. I WILL DO MY BEST TO HELP YOU SUCCEED, SO LONG AS YOU DO YOUR BEST IN CLASS!
