Morningside Middle School in Charleston, South Carolina, has a history spanning from its construction in 1955 to its demolition in 2024 and current replacement with a new school. Initially, it was designed for white students and began integrating in 1983. The school has undergone renovations and expansions over the years, and plans are in place to preserve its historical significance through various commemorative projects.

  • 1955: The school was built and initially served white students. 
  • 1983: Integration began at Morningside Middle School. 
  • 2022: Morningside students and staff were relocated to the swing space at the Garrett Academy of Technology located at 2731 Gordon St, North Charleston, while the original Morningside MS is being demolished and rebuilt.
  • 2023: Demolition and New School: The Charleston County School District (CCSD) demolished the existing building and is currently replacing it with a new $66 million school on the same site. 
  • December 2025: Move from Garrett into THE NEW MORNINGSIDE!

Preservation Efforts: The CCSD has been discussing ways to preserve the school's history, including preserving the front façade, using placards on the exterior, and incorporating bricks into the foundation of the new building.
